A testing season opener against Stellenbosch Scorpions

3 October 2026 · Away — venue to be confirmed

By Nic Slabber

On Saturday 3 October 2026, Groot Drakenstein Games Club opened the season against our old foes, the Stellenbosch Scorpions. Skipper Nic Slabber lost a crucial toss, and we had to bat first.

The pitch had plenty of tricks, with the ball sticking and bouncing in unexpected ways. Batting was challenging. Rikus Walters top-scored with 21, but his 51 balls faced tell the story of accurate bowling and how difficult it was to time the ball. We posted an under-par 109.

We expected the wicket to dry out and become easier to bat on later in the day. Scorpions’ batters accumulated runs more freely, putting us under pressure. Our slow bowlers managed to take some wickets, with Quintin van der Westhuizen the most successful, returning 2/10 in four overs.

Scorpions reached 110/3 in 24.1 overs, hitting the winning runs in the 25th over. It was not a good day at the office, but the friendships and camaraderie between these two teams remained a highlight of the day.
