OUR STORY
A century of sport and community.
The Groot Drakenstein Games Club (GDGC) is a unique and storied institution, standing as a beacon of true sportsmanship in the picturesque Groot Drakenstein Valley. Nestled between the majestic mountains of Paarl and Franschhoek, our club has served as a vital social and sporting hub for over a century.

While we are constantly evolving, we remain deeply rooted in our heritage. You can explore our full journey from 1895 to the present day by downloading the document below:
A Foundation of Sportsmanship.

Our story began in 1895, when players gathered for matches on temporary fields that were often no more than cow paddocks. In 1921, a pivotal moment arrived when local farmer H.E.V. Pickstone leased 10 acres of land to the club for a nominal fee. This lease came with one legendary condition that has flourished into a beloved tradition: that at least one game of cricket be played on the field each year.

A Landmark in South African Sport.

The GDGC holds a prestigious place in national sporting history. In 1926, through a massive community effort, our members established the first-ever turf wicket laid in South Africa. Officially named "The Pickstone Oval" in 1999, our grounds have hosted some of the biggest names in international cricket, including Jacques Kallis, Kevin Pietersen, and Jonny Bairstow.

A NEW CHAPTER

A Partnership for Rejuvenation.
While the history of GDGC is the foundation of who we are, the Club is always looking toward the future. On 1 June 2025, a new and exciting chapter began when the Franschhoek Sport & Social Club (FSSC) was appointed as the management company. Their vision is centered on a comprehensive rejuvenation of the Club, ensuring it remains a vibrant central hub for the surrounding communities for generations to come.

Under this new management, the Club immediately undertook a focused renovation of the clubhouse and grounds, elevating the historic Pickstone Oval pitch to the highest standards.
Expanding Our Community Horizon.

Most excitingly, the Club is currently completing three state-of-the-art Padel courts, marking a vibrant new era for our members. These courts are scheduled for a grand opening on 31 January 2026 as part of a major public relaunch event.

Beyond the pitch and the courts, GDGC is aggressively expanding to include everything from cycling and running to creative arts workshops and bridge clubs. The goal is to transform the Club into a versatile space where the entire community can gather, connect, and thrive. GDGC continues to honour its unique past while building a sustainable, dynamic future for all our members.
